Chapter 10 Questions

1. Scout says that "Atticus was feeble" (weak). Do you think that this is her view as she tells the story or her view when she was younger? Does she still think this after the events recorded in this chapter? Why/why not?

2. In this chapter Atticus tells his children that "it's a sin to kill a mockingbird". What reason does he give for saying this?

3. What does the shooting of Tim Johnson reveal about Heck Tate and Atticus? How does Atticus feel about how well he can shoot?

4. Jem and Scout have different views about telling people at school how well Atticus can shoot. Explain the difference. Which view is closer to your own?

4. Scout and Jem have diffrent view of this because Scout is very proud of the fact that Atticus can shoot very well but Jem isn't sure if its the right thing to do because he is thinking before his actions and thinking about what the consequences would be if he were to tell other people. I think this is because Scout is younger and eager to share things with others without thinking of what might happen. I agree with Jem's point of view because we would need to think of our actions before we follow through with them.

The shooting of Tim johnson reveals that Heck Tate and Atticus must have hunted together years back. Since Atticus has never mentioned this to his children, we can assume that he's not very proud of it, most likely because of how viciled he is in his heart.

I agree with victoria when she says they probably have a history with firearms because Heck didn't hesitate to giving the rifle to Atticus. Atticus was said to have the best shot with a rifle in the whole county. Also I agree when she says that he is not proud of it because hs kids had no clue that he was good with a gun.

I agree with Priscilla because you do find that younger kids are always more eager to everyone about exciting news that might not always be something you should be telling everyone. Jem is older so he has a better idea that even though the news that he found out was pretty cool he doesn't think everyone needs to know. Also if Atticus didn't tell Jem and scout about his shooting ability, he probably didn't want every other kid to know about.

1) I think this was shocking to Scout and Jem because they wouldn't expect Atticus to shoot the dog in one shot. Scout didn't know that Atticus could do anything cool like shooting a crazy dog.

2) Atticus thinks that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they do not do anything wrong, but only provide us with music and nice noises.

Scout and Jem have different views because Scout now knows something she can be proud of Atticus for, but Jem wants to keep quiet about it because Atticus lead on that he didn't want it to be publisized

2. Atticus tells Scout and Jem is that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don't affect you negatively in any way. All they do is make beautiful music for you while your outside. I also think that this is a metaphor, it is comparing how in the story they are killing "coloured" people just because they differ in skin colour. "Coloured" people are referred to as the "mockingbird" in this metaphor becuase they don't effect you negatively, they are just regular people like everybody else, so why would you kill someone that has not done anything except for live?

I also think this is why the title is "To Kill A Mockingbird" because I think that this book is trying to portray the fact that you should not be treated poorly and unfair just because of the certain skin colour that you have. I also think that they chose for the statement to come from Atticus because he is the protagonist in the story and because he is how people SHOULD act, such as following through with what YOU believe in even though everyone is against you on it and to have self respect for yourself by knowing you did the right thing, instead of acting like how the other people in Maycomb by gossiping, following everyone else by chosing to believe what they say is true even though it may not and thinking that you are better than everyone else just cause of your skin colour.

3.Heck Tate was very hesetant about shooting Tim Johnson because he confessed that he had a very bad shot (aim). Heck Tate insisted on having Atticus shoot the dog because Atticus has "the best shot in town". Atticus was very modest about his ability to shoot because he did not want to give the impression that shooting a gun is an everyday "thing" in front of his kids.

1. Towards the beginning of the story both Scout and Jem feel that Atticus is feeble because his job is not physical. In their opinion he just reads in the living room. Atticus is also much older than the other parents. After Scout and Jem see Atticus shoot the dog they realize that he isn't less manly than the other fathers and he has a skill that is well appreciated.

2. The reason Atticus says, "...it is a sin to kill a mockingbird" is that Jem complains about not having a gun at his age to practise shooting on birds. Atticus then tells him that if he does shoot birds with his gun that he can shoot as many blue jays as he wants but to remember not to kill mockingbirds. When Scout doesn't understand what her father is saying, she asks Miss Maudie and she explains that a mockingbird does nothing more then make beautiful music for everyone to enjoy. It would be a sin to take one's life for no reason at all.

This is the title of this novel because it is relating to the trial of Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a kind hearted coloured man who is acussed of sexually abusing a young white woman and is on a death sentence if convicted. When Atticus is asked to defend him, he finds that there was no way this could have happened. In Maycomb, it comes as second nature to most to treat the coloured community with disrespect so they do not listen to the evidence. Tom Robinson can be seen as a mockingbird in the sense that it is a sin to kill him for doing no wrong and just being a kind man.

1. This is her view when she was still young. At the time, Scout was still growing and she measured strength by literally physical strength; she did not have the maturity to see through her fathers physical inability and recognise his other talents. However, after Atticus shot a mad dog on his first attempt, Scout began to regard him with newfound admiration. Finally, she could boast in Atticus as his claim to fame was that he was a "dead shot" and used to be the best shooter in town.

2. Atticus does not actually himself reveal the meaning behind his statement. It is Miss Maudie who explains that since "they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us", to kill them would be a sin. The mockingbird represents true goodness and purity, they are creatures that sing beautifully and do no one harm. (The mockingbirds in the book are Tom Robinson and Boo Radley)

3. It reveals that they are aware of each other's shooting ability. Perhaps they have hunted before or were childhood friends. This suggests that they are on good terms with each other. Furthermore the fact that they are on first name basis highlights their friendship. Atticus is modest and prefers not to elaborate on the extent of his ability. ("Hush, Heck")He had also never told his children about his skill because he was not proud of it and he did not want Scout and Jem to like him for the wrong reasons. Jem understands this and at the end when he says "Atticus is a gentleman just like me!" we know that he loves his father for all the right reasons, his sense of humility and level-headedness.

4. When Scout excitedly tells Jem that they can tell all their friends about their father's legendary skill, Jem tells her not to say anything about it. Jem understood that his father decided not to mention his history as a shooter because he was not proud of it. Therefore they should respect his decision and keep his profile as a "dead shot" low-key.
