1) Atticus advises Jem to ignore Mrs. Dubose's taunts because she is just a sick old lady. Even though Mrs. Dubose says rude comments and insults to Jem, he was told to not talk back, and just ignore it. Atticus had a role model figure; everday, he would stop in front of Mrs. Dubose's house, take off his hat and greet her. He does this, despite the many others who were not brave enough to. This is why Scout said "It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived." Atticus inspires his children.

3) Mrs.Dubose asks Jem to read to her every day for a month, two hours a day. She asks Jem to do this because he ruined her flowers. Mrs. Dubose gains a distraction from the clock which tells her when to take her medicine. Jem gains courage and maturity.

3. When Mrs. Dubose makes a rude remark that offends Jem, he decides to retaliate by destroying some of her flowers. As punishment, she requests that Jem read to her after school for one month. What Mrs. Dubose gains out of the experience is someone to spend her last weeks with and someone to read to her. Jem gains courage and from that he also gains maturity.

Atticus advises Jem to go down and have a talk with Mrs. Dubose after him trashing her frontyard from the rude and nasty taunts. He states that every person in that town had a right to their own individual opinion on the situation. Both children had to learn to ignore and stay polite to any comments they recieved; to let the people in Maycomb County think what they want. Atticus said that no matter what she said, doing that to an old and sick lady was unacceptable. He tried to be a role model for both children, and demonstrate proper behavior by being polite, kind and a true gentlemen everytime when walking by Mrs. Dubose house.

2) Mrs.Dubose is an elderly woman who lives two houses down from the Finches. Many people refer to her as irritable or crotchety because she sits in her wheelchair and bickers at people who walk by. Mrs. Dubose loves plants, especially her camellias and when Jem decides to destroy them, he has to repay her by reading to her every afternoon (which shows that she is also stubborn).

2. Mrs. Dubose lives a few dorrs down from Jem and Scout. She is stubborn and rude to people passing by, particularly Jem and Scout. She is particular about her flowers, and thinks little of people's feelings. Her rash remarks to people passing by has given her the reputation of being a cruel, and grouchy old woman.

1) Atticus tells Jem to "hold [his] head high and be a gentleman". No matter what, Jem was not to let her get to him. He was supposed to graciously understand and accept Mrs Dubose's snide remarks and repay them with kindness.

2) Mrs Dubose lives with her helper, Jessie and she spends most of her time sitting in her wheelchair on her porch. She is a sickly old neighbor two houses down from the Finches who yells mean things at Scout and Jem about how rude, useless and disgraceful they are. She has many flowers in her garden that she enjoys and although most people avoid her and her relentless insults, Atticus holds her up as an example of true courage. Mrs Dubose was administered morphine as a painkiller, and she subsequently became addicted to it. However in order to die free, "beholden to nothing and nobody", she fights against her morphine addiction, even though she knows she will die in the process.

3)Mrs Dubose punishes Jem by requesting that he read to her ever afternoon except sunday for two hours for a month. Mrs Dubose wants Jem to be there for her torment as this is a form of release for her. Mrs Dubose is in constant agony from not being on her pain-killers and Jem helps distract her, so she does not concentrate on the pain. Jem gains maturity, self-control, graciousness and an insight on what real courage is. He struggles under the constant battering and insults hurled at him but he soon learns to tolerate Mrs Dubose and faces her with a face "devoid of resentment."
